Case Study for Metronet

Metronet Rail makes 'mind the gap' public announcements clearer - 2004 (This article is also availale on the Metronet website)

London, 25th June 2004: Metronet Rail, responsible for revitalising two-thirds of the London Tube has installed 70 high tech digital voice-recording computers on sub-surface line Tube stations to improve the quality of public announcements. Broadcast quality voices can be heard announcing familiar phrases such as ‘mind the gap'.

In the past various accents have made it difficult for all announcements to be clearly understood. Information messages were recorded by London based Henrietta Bess, a professional voice artist, and Richard Whitmore, former BBC newsreader. London Underground station staff can select the messages they require by choosing from coloured icons on a touch screen.

Metronet's Asset Engineer, Nicky Spiers, commented: “Clear audible public announcements will have a positive impact on Tube journeys. LU staff can now communicate with the travelling public by using the same ‘voices'.” A few sites already had digital voice recordings installed. Now Metronet Rail is updating older models and installing the computer system for the first time at various stations. The digital voice announcer system is designed by Voice Perfect Ltd. and is capable of creating nearly a million different messages.
